Christopher Columbus

image: ColumbusOn 3rd August 1492, Christopher Columbus left Spain with his fleet of three ships, the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Niña, to set sail across the Atlantic to America.

Who was Christopher Columbus?

Cristoforo Colombo, or Christopher Columbus, was an Italian explorer. He was born in 1451 in Genoa in Italy. At the age of 13 he went to sea. Columbus found sea journeys very exciting and travelled to many land.

Why is Christopher Columbus famous?

He is known as 'the man who discovered America'.

How did he discover America?

Columbus discovered America by accident. He was trying to find a new route to China and thought by sailing west he would find a quicker and easier route.

On 12 October 1492, Christopher Columbus reached the Americas. The second Monday in October is Columbus Day, a holiday commemorating this event.
