On 28 February 1953, two Cambridge scientists announced they had "found the secret of life". James Watson and Francis Crick had decoded the structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Why was their discovery important? Their discovery that life's hereditary genetic information is structured in a double helix set the foundations for incrediable advances in molecular biology and gave us a better understanding of the human body and how life is able to occur.
