On 4 February 1927, Malcolm Campbell of England, reached over 174.883mph (281.447kph) in Bluebird on the Pendine Sands in Wales to set a new land speed record.

The Bluebird is unique as it was the first car built strictly for breaking the land speed record.

In 1928 at Daytona Beach, Florida, Campbell reached 206.35 mph. Four years and one day later, in 1931, he reached a record-breaking 245 mph, again at Daytona Beach.

The land speed record is the fastest speed achieved by any wheeled vehicle on land.

When and what was the first land speed record?

On 18 December 1898, Count Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat of Paris, France, drove the electric powered car called Jeantaud Duc at a grand speed of 39.24mph (63.15 km/h)

What is the current land speed record?

On 15 October 1997, Andy Green in ThrustSSC, a twin turbofan jet-powered car achieved 763.035 mph (1227.985 km/h). This was the first supersonic record as it broke the sound barrier at Mach 1.016.
