Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869, in Porbander in western India.
Gandhi was an Indian political and spiritual leader.
Gandhi is famous for working to achieve freedom and equality for all, in India and in Africa.
He is remembered for his non-violent creed, and for his belief that black and white people should have equal rights, and be looked upon the same as every other person.
He influenced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and millions of other people.
Gandhi was assinated in the garden of his home in New Delhi on 20 January 1948.
On the anniversary of Gandhi's birth, Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated. It is one of the three official declared National Holidays of India and is observed in all Indian states and union territories.
