Dussehra or Vijaya Dashami is an important Hindu festival. It is the culmination of the nine-day Navratri celebrations and commemorates Lord Rama’s victory over the evil demon Ravana.

On the day of Dussehra, Rama killed the great demon Ravan, after he had kidnapped and taken his wife Sita to his kingdom of Lanka. According to the Hindu mythology Ravana was a 10-headed demon king. Rama, along with his brother Lakshman and devoted follower Hanuman, and an army of monkeys fought a great battle to rescue his lovely wife Sita. The war against Ravan lasted for ten days and ended with the death of Ravana.
