Language is a major form of communication that allows us to share ideas and stories with others. Annually on 26 September, the European Day of Languages (EDL) celebrates language and cultural diversity. The day was first celebrated in 2001, the European Year of Languages, and involves more people every year.

Over 6000 languages are spoken in the world.  Out of the 6 billion people in the world, approximately one and a quarter billion people speak Chinese; 550 million speak English; Hindustani speakers number 500 million and Spanish is spoken by 450 million.
