Inflatable Tyre

On 23 July 1888, Scottish man, John Boyd Dunlop, applied to patent the pneumatic (inflatable) tyre as "an improvement in the tyres or wheels for bicycles, tricycles and other road tyres." Wheels before this time were made out of solid rubber.

In 1895 the pneumatic tyre was first used on cars, by Andre and Edouard Michelin.

The first tyres and where the name tyre comes from

The first tyres were bands of iron on the wheels of carts and wagons. Craftsmen, known as wheelwrights, would forge the metal bands to the wooden wheels to ‘tie’ the spokes of the wheel together.
